This weeks spellings are looking at adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words ending in -fer.
What suffixes could you add to the words: refer, prefer, offer, transfer?
Suffixes (remember suffixes are what we add to the end of a word): –ing, -ed, -al, -ence
When we 'stress' a sound it means that we emphasise it. So in words with the -fer ending is we stress the - fer in the word when the suffix is added, it means that we double the r. If the -fer is not stressed, we just add the suffix.
Example: The word transferred; you would stress/emphasise the -fer so we double the r. However, in preference you do not stress/emphasise the -fer therefore, you would not double the r.
Find the definition of these words in a dictionary and put them into sentences. If possible, get someone to test you on these spelling words next Monday (6.4.20).
