Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Leverington Primary, we teach French across Key Stage 2 using the Kapow scheme of work to support the teaching and learning of French. This provides clear progression for the development of speaking, listening and vocabulary acquisition. In order to teach languages in a memorable way, we use a variety of resources, including art and role play, to enhance the learning opportunities for all pupils.

Kapow has purposefully been built around the principles of evidence-led practice. Each unit of study focuses on phonics, vocabulary and grammar to help the children to develop their oracy skills.

Through the French scheme, pupils are given opportunities to communicate for practical
purposes around familiar subjects and routines. The scheme provides balanced opportunities
for communication in both spoken and written French, although in Year 3 the focus is on
developing oral skills, before incorporating written French in Year 4 and beyond.

Key areas of focus have been deliberately selected to ensure that pupils are equipped with the knowledge and language that will serve them in engaging with important and useful topics, such as the environment, wellbeing and travel. It focusses not only on vocabulary acquisition, but on the building blocks of learning a new language.
