We have worked hard to develop a broad, balanced curriculum that provides all learners with key knowledge and skills to enable them to become lifelong learners. We aim to ensure that whilst providing children with this knowledge, lessons are also exciting and engaging, igniting their curiosity and giving them a passion for learning. We hope to create resilient, curious and tenacious learners that are fully prepared for their futures beyond Leverington Primary. We hope to provide the perfect balance between an excellent education, uncompromising pastoral care and the nurtured development of every individual child’s qualities. In line with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014, our curriculum is accessible for all children and provision is adapted to meet the needs of individual learners.
All pupils will secure firm foundations in English and Maths, and through the high expectations and aspirations of all staff, we believe that this will lead to improved outcomes in all foundation subjects. We also strongly believe that the development of reading, writing, communication and maths skills should be embedded within all subjects and allow children to reapply their skills in a variety of different contexts.
At Leverington Primary Academy, we aim to provide a curriculum that is modern, inspiring and relevant to the needs of children within our community. We hope to develop the core skills needed in English and Maths, however also place great value on developing the whole child. We have an increased focus on ensuring children learn to learn and develop personal qualities such as resilience, independence, confidence and responsibility.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children are regularly assessed throughout the year, with the aim of achieving the Early Learning Goal by the end of year. Since the changes to the Development Matters document, greater emphasis is placed on staff playing alongside the children, encouraging talk and extending and deepening learning. Expectations are increased within the Summer Term to ensure all children are suitably prepared for a successful transition to Year 1 and are more resilient to cope with the demands of the curriculum. In Key Stage 1 and 2, daily rigorous teaching continues to ensure that children are given numerous opportunities to apply, consolidate and deepen their learning, skills and knowledge further.
Our planning for the foundation subjects is built around the CUSP (Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership) curriculum. The curriculum is effectively sequenced, cumulative, vocabulary and knowledge-rich. It focuses heavily on the ‘what’ – with knowledge being clearly verbalised, concepts clearly identified, and subject-specific vocabulary taught and used. Through the carefully planned sequence of lessons, both within and across year groups, knowledge is cumulative and retrievable. We have adapted the curriculum to match with our local context and to meet the needs of individual cohorts.
